Cheer up. Your skills WILL come back. I have experienced this cycle before where you start out great, then you try to use too much detail or too much something and in your eyes, it comes out ugly. YOu continue to try the trick, thinking it's not what's wrong, and you still think it comes out bad. There's a cure.
Try to draw really simple things. Start with stick figures. Then move up to, say, a kindergarten level. Then move up a little more adding more and more detail each time until you hit the bump on the log.
